Until 2009 the number of contenders in the 4 line cordless phone space was limited to say the least. The Panasonic KX-TG4500B was the only serious option until an innovative AT&T 4 line DECT phone system was announced. The AT&T SB67118 has attracted a lot of interest, especially from users of older Panasonic 4 line phone systems. Evidently the combination of DECT 6.0 technology and the AT&T brand name is a potent blend. The level interest is no doubt also a consequence of pent up demand. Multi line cordless phones have changed little in recent years. Panasonic upgraded it's flagship 4 line phone from 2.4 GHz to 5.8 GHz, but made few if any other changes.
The SB67118 on the other hand introduces several major innovations. One of the most impressive of these is zero blind spot technology. Up to 6 repeaters can be connected to a base station. Repeaters can be linked to one another and handsets are able roam between them. They not only increase cordless phone range, but can also deflect signals around solid obstructions. The net result is a cost effective ultra long range cordless phone.
The SB67118 is more expandable than the Panasonic 5.8GHz cordless phone: 10 versus 8 handsets. It's also compatible with AT&T TL7600 cordless headsets. The AT&T cordless phone supports Push to Talk Technology (PTP). It's a compelling feature for home and small business users who may be spread about a large building and need to ask a question or share important information without the formality of a phone call. Both the AT&T and Panasonic 4 line business phones have prominent ariels on their respective base units. We don't think that's a bad thing as cordless phone ariels are getting smaller to achieve sleek lines at the expense of cordless phone range. AT&T SB67118 Specifications
DECT 6.0 TechnologyIt took a surprisingly long time for a manufacturer to release a DECT 4 line cordless phone system. Consumers have taken to DECT 6.0 phones and they have become the default cordless home phone. The advantages of DECT 6.0 over earlier generations of cordless phone technology are such that within a few years DECT cordless phones will rule unchallenged. We will watch with interest to see how long it takes Panasonic to respond to the challenge. From the cordless phone reviews we have received so far it's clear that the ATT cordless phone is a solid if slightly more complicated alternative to the Panasonic 4 line cordless phone system.
