Latest Cordless Phone Systems
A Guide to the Best and Coolest Cordless Phones

The latest cordless phone systems are a great advance on those of just a few years ago. Manufacturers have been under intense pressure to come up with "cool phones" based on the latest technology, but to also slash the cost of their phones.

Best Cordless Phones

Which is the best cordless telephone? The answer depends on how the phone is to be used and the buyer's budget. Cheap cordless phones are some of the best sellers, but demand for high end Bluetooth cordless phones and VoIP cordless phones is also very strong.

DECT 6.0 Technology

Latest Cordless Phone Systems

Almost without exception the latest cordless phone systems are DECT 6.0 phones. The technology addresses issues associated with cordless phone interference, range and battery life. Furthermore the top rated phones are almost exclusively DECT phones, as are the best selling phones.

Panasonic Cordless Telephones

Panasonic has the biggest share of the cordless phone market. It consistently tops the cordless phone ratings with models that are competitively priced and innovative. They offer exclusive features such as: talking caller ID, call blocking, visual voicemail, well spaced buttons, extended talk time and the ability to use standard rechargeable AAA batteries. The latest generation of Panasonic DECT 6.0 Plus phones have further reinforced the hold of Panasonic cordless phones on the top end of the market.

Cordless Phones with Answering Machines

Deciding between them is a matter of deciding whether you are looking for a bare bones cordless phone, or a high end cordless phone answering machine. Unsurprisingly the pick of the crop is a Panasonic phone.

Cheap Cordless Phones

VTech has mastered the science of high volume - low cost manufacturing. VTech phones are very price competitive and always stand out from the rest. Cordless phone reviews regularly describe them as being the "coolest" or "sleekest." On the other hand they are often quite basic in terms of features and technology. The big exception to this rule is in the area of Bluetooth technology, where VTech cordless phones are amongst the most advanced.

Bluetooth Cordless Phones

Panasonic, Vtech and Siemens cordless phones are the main players in the Bluetooth cordless telephone space. The contrast between these options couldn't be more stark. Siemens cordless phones radiate European style and engineering excellence. One of the best examples is the Siemens SL785 with Bluetooth connectivity. It's a home phone system that can pair with a Bluetooth wireless headset, exchange data via Bluetooth and deliver the clearest sound. It's also one of few phones made from "genuine" metal rather than plastic.

VoIP Cordless Phones

Within a few years most cordless phone systems will be cordless VoIP phones. The traditional land line phone service is under siege and consumers are switching to residential VoIP services because it's cheaper and often better. They may initially use an analog telephone adapter supplied by a VoIP phone company, but there is growing trend towards SIP based online phone services and customers bringing their own voice over IP phones.

It's another niche that Siemens has targeted with a range of dual mode phones that can be used with either a land line phone service or any SIP based voice over IP provider. The Siemens S675IP is the top of the range. It's an elegant hybrid phone that can be used with multiple voice service providers as well as traditional home phone service providers.

2 line cordless phone

Two Line Cordless Phone

Until 2009 there were only one or two DECT 2 line cordless phones. Every manufacturer has now hopped on the bandwagon. Despite the competition it's a niche that Panasonic continues to dominate with a range of models, but Uniden is finally catching up. Uniden's DECT4000 series is impressive. It's also more expandable than most other options.

4 Line Cordless Phones

The Panasonic KX-TG4500B is a robust war horse that thousands of small business owners depend upon and swear by. However it's one of the last remaining 5.8 GHz phones in the Panasonic catalogue and it's obviously long in the tooth when compared with an upstart from AT&T.

It's not like Panasonic to rest on its laurels and wait for competitors to displace a top performer, but that's what its done. The AT&T SB67118 is a serious competitor. It's a DECT 6.0 4 line cordless phone system with all the features of the Panasonic phone plus greater coverage courtesy of optional range extenders. Apart from these two cordless phone systems there are no other serious contenders in the 4 line cordless phone niche.

Cordless Headset Phone

Thanks to Plantronics and the headset telephone, cordless phone systems are going hands free. The Plantronics CT14 is a compact portable phone that can be clipped onto a belt or attached to clothing. Add a noise cancelling headset and the wearer is free to roam at will within a 300 feet radius of a base station and answer calls while taking on tasks with both hands. Yes the CT14 is also a DECT 6.0 cordless phone.

Summary

While some manufacturers continuously raise the bar and set new benchmarks the rest are content with taking 3rd, 4th and 5th place. When comparing the latest cordless phone systems we go through a check list of "must have features." We call it our best cordless phone litmus test.
