From 900 MHz Cordless Phones to DECT 6.0 Technology

Identifying the right cordless phone technology is the key to finding the best cordless phones. Since the first commercially available cordless phone appeared in the early 1980's much has changed. The wireless home phone of that era has little in common with the DECT 6.0 cordless phones of today.

Cordless Phone Frequencies

As the FCC has progressively made frequency ranges available, we have seen corresponding developments in cordless phone technology. The 900MHz cordless phones of the early and mid-1990's had great range, but they were susceptible to a number of problems. These included cordless phone interference and vulnerability to eavesdropping. Their base stations were also limited to communicating with a single cordless handset. It wasn't until the emergence of the digital cordless phone that multi handset cordless phones became a possibility.

The Digital Cordless Phone System

Digital cordless phones began to appear in 1998 when the FCC released the 2.4 GHz bandwidth. Multi handset cordless phones became available and frequency hopping technology improved the security of cordless phone calls. However it didn't overcome the problem of cordless phone interference. Overcrowding of the bandwidth in fact made 2.4 GHz cordless phones unusable in many locations.

Multi Line Cordless Phones

Access to the 5.8 GHz frequency gave impetus to the development of more advanced digital cordless phone technology. Issues with security and interference were generally consigned to the past and multi line cordless phones became common. Most were 2 line cordless phones, but 4 line cordless phones also became popular as small business phone systems.

DECT 6.0 Technology

The emergence of DECT technology was the most significant development in the history of cordless phone technology. It not only addressed the problems encountered by early users of the technology, it's also an open standard. There were major proprietary differences between 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz phones, which don't apply to DECT cordless phones. However, this doesn't mean that all DECT phones are the same. Most manufacturers have added features on top of the core DECT technology to differentiate their products.

Panasonic has probably made the biggest investment in differentiating it's DECT 6.0 cordless phones by developing complimentary cordless phone technology. Examples of these features include:

• the talking caller ID telephone
• the ability to call block a phone number based on caller ID
• visual voicemail

Plantronics is another example, it took the route of developing a wearable DECT 6.0 cordless headset phone. Other manufacturers including VTech and Siemens Gigaset have developed convergent DECT- Bluetooth cordless phones.

DECT 6.0 Phones

DECT 6.0 digital technology is now used in almost every cordless home phone. The same trend is being repeated in the multi line cordless phone segment. Most cordless phone manufacturers have released a DECT 6.0 two line cordless phone and AT&T's SB67118 is challenging Panasonic's iconic KX-TG4500B for the title of best 4 line cordless phone system.
