I had the same problem too with it not working. I needed to call 9-1-1 one morning and the phone had no dial tone. Luckily, I had a Panasonic phone a few feet away in the next room that worked fine. No more GE phones for me!

i have the same problem,,of having to pull out the battery,,and put it back in to get a tone..

It's probably the worst cordless phone ever made. They're junk. The sound quality is fine when the thing works. Don't ever count on it working when you want it to. They look nice and flashy but that's where it ends.
And buyers beware - GE's toll-free customer service is a recording. if you persist it eventually directs you to their website or a non-toll-free number.
Don't waste time trying to figure it out or get it fixed. Junk it and find a non-GE replacement.
PS - I heard that GE has shut it's cordless phone business down. Smart move.
