Cordless Phone Reviews and Ratings

Sony Cordless Phones
vs. Panasonic and Uniden Phones

Back in the 80's and 90's Sony cordless phones were one of the most popular brands. In fact Sony was one of first companies to introduce portable phones to the consumer market. They are still available, but becoming increasingly difficult to find. Furthermore we have only been able to locate the odd 2.4 GHz and 900 MHz cordless phone, but no DECT 6.0 Sony cordless telephones at all.

Japanese Technology

Unless someone can tell us differently, it appears that Sony has quit the cordless phone business to focus on PlayStations, movies, music etc. It would be an entirely understandable move, as Sony cordless phones are up against fierce competition from two other Japanese companies that take cordless telephones very seriously: Panasonic and Uniden.

The latest Uniden and Panasonic cordless telephones are DECT 6.0 phones. Both companies have committed heavily to DECT technology and Panasonic in particular has staked out the premium end of the market with it's DECT 6.0 Plus Phones.

900 MHz Cordless Phones

In recent years 900 MHz phones have become associated with long range cordless phones. EnGenius phones successfully staked out the space when Sony and others left the field.

They are also popular as big button cordless phones. It's because they were designed in the 90's before cell phones and cordless phones began to get smaller. For these reasons several Uniden 900 MHz phones continue to enjoy strong demand despite their retro-styling.

Vintage Phones

Cordless phone frequencies are a reliable indicator of a phone's vintage. 900 MHz phones had their hay day in the mid 90's. In 1998 the 2.4 GHz frequency was allocated by the FCC and it reigned supreme until the mid 2000's when DECT 6.0 phones began to emerge.

Bottom Line

If you have a 900 MHz Sony cordless telephone in mint condition, we suggest that you put it in a safe place for a few more years. It maybe worth more than you think to a collector of retro or vintage cordless phones.
