We've found a Uniden cordless telephone that has completely changed our mind about Uniden phones. In recent times they have been far from innovative. They were built on the same cordless phone technology as competitive products and were almost indistinguishable from every other DECT 6.0 cordless phone.

While Uniden slumbered Panasonic stole market share. It's top of the range DECT 6.0 phones offered features that were unavailable on Uniden telephones. Consumers were hooked on features including: Panasonic talking caller ID, visual voicemail and call blocking. Finally Uniden has struck back with a phone that deserves top cordless phone ratings.

The DECT2185 is a generous big button cordless phone, but apart from that it doesn't look too different from a dozen other cordless phones with answering machines. It's naturally got all the standard features that we expect from a DECT phone, so what's special about it?

Anonymous Call Block

Panasonic introduced call ID phone call blocking and now millions of us are able to avoid being harassed by past partners and other acquaintances. That is provided they call from a known number and don't call "private."

The latest Uniden cordless telephone also has phone call blocking, but in addition to being able to nominate up twenty numbers on a call block list, it also allows the blocking of both unknown and private numbers.

Anonymous call blocking is the ultimate weapon against telemarketers. We have never met anyone who didn't want to block telemarketing calls. This feature on it's own makes the DECT2185 attractive, but there is more.

Advanced Phonebook Features

The DECT2185 has a 70 name phonebook that can be searched alphabetically and ringers assigned by caller. That's nice but not too unusual. What is interesting are the options available for maintaining contact details in the phonebook(s).

In the past phonebooks were commonly stored in handsets. In a house with multiple units the benefit was that each user could maintain their own list of contacts. It's a feature that teenage daughters find compelling. On the other hand in homes where any handset can be used by anyone it's not so good. The phonebooks are never in sync as they need to be manually maintained. In response Panasonic introduced a single shared phonebook which is always up-to-date across all handsets. With the exception of teenage daughters it's generally the preferred way to go.

This new Uniden phone has the upped the anti. It supports both options. Furthermore, entire phonebooks or individual entries can be easily copied and transferred.

Do Not Disturb (DND) Mode

It's a feature that's not unique to this Uniden cordless telephone, but one that many competing products don't have. When activated all calls are directed to the answering machine. The Panasonic KX-TG7400 cordless telephone answering machine also has a silent mode. It lets users specify the hours between which the ringer on individual handsets are silenced.

Final Thoughts

Uniden telephones have always had an excellent reputation. Unfortunately the first generation of Uniden DECT phones were almost indistinguishable from those carrying competing brand names. The latest phones are a great improvement. They are serious option for anyone looking to upgrade their cordless phone system.
