The Uniden TRU9496 is a 5.8 GHz two line cordless phone. It's a good looking, well designed corded cordless phone and works well in either home or small office environments. Like all other phones in the TRU series it is packed full of excellent features. Uniden manufactures the biggest range of 2 line cordless phones. They are nearly all 5.8 GHz phones, but in late 2009 the company released it's first DECT 6.0 two line cordless phone - the Uniden DECT 4086. It competes with the Panasonic KX-TG9392T and 2 line DECT phones that have now been released by most of the major manufacturers.
Uniden TRU9496 Pros and ConsUniden's 5.8 GHz two line cordless phones are some of the best rated cordless phones. Many would argue that 5.8 GHz is the best cordless phone frequency for multi line telephones. Pros:1. The TRU9496 is a genuine 5.8 cordless phone (some competing brands use the 2.4 GHz frequency on the handset-to-base leg as a way of overcoming issues with the length of talk time that can can be achieved between charges) delivering excellent clarity, range, security and freedom from interference. 2. It's a two line cordless conference phone - capable of supporting 7-way conferencing. 3. Handsets have in-built two-way radio communication. They can be used as an in-house intercom or good but inexpensive baby monitors. 4. It's a 2 line answering machine, as it includes an integrated 15-minute digital answering system with all associated features from remote access to alerts. 5. Handsets are speaker phones. 6. Expandable up to ten (10) cordless handsets including waterproof phone options.
Cons:1. Cordless phone range is not an issue for the great majority of users. When there are issues they generally relate to the location of the base station. Elevating the base station will usually overcome any problems. There is no visible antenna on TRU9496 handsets, which could explain why we encounter range related comments less frequently from users of the Panasonic KX-TG6702B. 2. As both the Panasonic KX-TG6702B and Uniden TRU9496 have integrated digital answering machines, neither was designed to alert users to voice mails sent by phone companies. There are Uniden phones without answering systems (TRU8866 and TRU9466) that do, but we have yet to find a phone that handles both styles of messaging adequately. 3. Uniden telephones seldom have issues with handsets holding their charge unless a battery is faulty or at the end of its life. However, two line cordless phones are often often used by small business operators or home based consultants who find themselves on extended conference calls. Because of this it's surprising that many cordless phones including the TRU9466 and Panasonic KX-TG6702B don't enable handsets to be used while docked and charging. 4. In nearly all respects this phone over delivers. It even includes belt clips for the handsets, which other companies (Panasonic) charge extra for. In view of this generosity of spirit we wonder why the integrated Uniden answering machine is capped at just 15 minutes of recording time versus the Panasonic's 60 minutes. Apart from the above niggles this Uniden cordless telephone has no major flaws and we like it a lot. Competitive Two Line Cordless Phone SystemsThere are only a handful of good to great 5.8 GHz two line cordless phone systems with answering systems that we would recommend. In addition to the Uniden TRU9496 they include: 1. Panasonic KX-TG6702B - 2 line cordless phone system. 2. AT&T TL76108 - 2 line corded cordless phone system. Choosing between the Panasonic cordless phone and the TRU9466 is not easy. They're both dependable and functional phone systems. While the Uniden phone may have the edge in looks, design and features we prefer the Panasonic option. In our case the decider was the answering machine. We require a cordless answering machine with more than 15 minutes of recording time otherwise we would toss a coin.
